Chapter 805 I Have a Friend
"You mean, Tony Stark wants you to be his photographer when Mary Jane interviews him again, so you came to take pictures of me to prepare for the interview?"
Gwen listened with considerable dissatisfaction to Peter's reason for taking her picture. She had thought Peter had finally come to his senses, but it turned out he was worried about not being able to take a good picture for the Daily Bugle. That was really too much.
"I was wondering why Mary Jane, the lead singer, hadn't been to the band these past couple of days. Turns out she's been busy with something."
"Speaking of which," Peter realized he hadn't been paying much attention to Gwen's daily life, "have you been so engrossed in patrolling lately that you haven't been going to the band much?"
"I did go, but... the training time might not be as long anymore."
Gwen awkwardly brushed her hair aside as she spoke, but then she heard Peter's shutter click. She instinctively exclaimed, "Hey!" Peter, looking at the photo in the camera, said, "I think this one is pretty good."
"...Alright then." Gwen didn't say anything after hearing this, but then she thought of something strange and began to wonder: "Speaking of which, why did Mary Jane ask you to inquire about the possibility of interviewing Tony Stark?"
"As you know, after Tony Stark got splashed with water, news about it spread like wildfire. The Daily Bugle was also planning to write an article about it, which touched on many product quality issues at Stark Industries. Mary Jane didn't know what some of the key terms meant, so she came to me to ask."
"Did you explain these words to her?"
“No, I called Stark first to ask how things were going, and he told me to wait three days for the big one,” Peter explained. “So when I heard that, I went and told Mary Jane.”
"Ah, so in the end, you brought this on yourself."
Peter paused for a moment, then realized that he shouldn't have said it that way, so he shook his head.
Gwen tilted her head and thought for a moment, then continued, "But then again, I thought she knew you were Spider-Man, otherwise why would she ask you something like that? Have you considered how to answer her about how you were able to contact Tony Stark?"
"I haven't really thought about that yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to handle it by then."
Gwen frowned at Peter, then asked the next question: "Speaking of which, how are you and Mary Jane going to find Stark? According to you, he's still at the Avengers base, right? That place is in New Jersey."
-
Finally, Peter and Mary Jane agreed to meet at the entrance of the Baxter Building. Peter didn't have to wait long; a few minutes later, Mary Jane arrived, looking at Peter with a mixture of apology and excitement: "You are... no, I shouldn't say that. Thank you so much for helping me, Peter. I really didn't expect this to come true. Really, interviewing Tony Stark—he's never given an interview before!"
"Unfortunately, he is still unwilling to conduct the entire interview via video or live stream, and the report can only be presented in text. Sometimes I think Tony Stark is still quite conservative in this regard."
Mary Jane paused for a moment, then looked at Peter, somewhat puzzled: "You called him Tony Stark?"
"...Isn't that his name?"
"Um, I thought you'd use some other name. So, have you seen him? At Baxter Building? What do you usually call him?"
"Mr. Stark."
Mary Jane was somewhat surprised. She had assumed Peter and Tony's relationship would be closer, after all, Peter had not only given her inside information but also secured an interview opportunity for her. But now it seemed that Peter and Tony's relationship wasn't quite...close?
"Okay, so you're saying we met in front of Baxter Tower because Tony Stark is here?"
"No, it's just that he's the only driver I could find to take us to New Jersey."
New Jersey? What is Tony Stark doing in New Jersey?
Confused, Mary Jane followed Peter's gaze and saw a Ferrari sports car with a burning pattern paint job drive up. After the window rolled down, the blond young man inside took off his sunglasses, which were completely unnecessary in November, and whistled at Peter: "Hey, Peter, over here."
"He, he is..."
"Johnny Storm, you could say he's a friend of mine."
"Good morning, misses. It would be my pleasure to serve you. To be honest, if it weren't for the fact that we're taking ordinary people with us, I would be happy to fly you straight to the Avengers' new home. But since that's not convenient, let's just drive there."
Peter didn't listen to much from Thunderbolt; he simply opened the passenger door, got in, and asked, "I didn't know your car was a sports car."
"Because I usually drive either the Fantastic Four's flying car or I fly there myself, I only drive this car when I'm on a date. Oh, today is the first time I've driven this car outside of my date. Come on in, ma'am."
Mary Jane opened the car door incredulously and sat in the back seat. Peter was still asking Johnny if he knew the way, and Johnny replied, "I checked the way two or three times while I was flying." In short, it sounded very unsettling.
"Oh, um, hello. I'm Mary Jane, Peter's classmate."
"Oh, right, I know, although I only found out yesterday. Peter basically doesn't talk about his classmates at Baxter Building. You're not as good as your classmate in that respect, what's his name again? The Japanese one?"
"Amadeus is of Korean descent."
"Well, it makes no difference to me."
Johnny started the engine as he spoke, flooring the gas pedal and immediately shifting into fourth gear. The car was still running! Peter glanced at the rapidly changing street scenes on either side and asked incredulously, "Isn't this speeding?"
"No, Reed installed a speed limiter on the car. It will stop automatically if I'm close to speeding. Uh, it will stop on the side of the road and won't start, not just suddenly stop on the road."
As Johnny spoke, he turned on the car stereo, and then, with rock music playing, he rested one hand on the window and shook the steering wheel: "Oh, by the way, where were we?"
